IF AN EYELASH FALLS OUT, MAKE A WISH!
My friend Carly loves travelling and often spends months in different countries. Last weekend she was finally back home for once. We decided to meet in our favourite sushi restaurant to catch up on all the news.
Between courses, we soon started chatting about the wonderful trip Carly had been on this time.
She had travelled around Indonesia and had noticed that people were very attached to their culture and beliefs. Especially the older generation and people living in the villages. Almost everyone still believes in myths and superstitions.
Carly told me about a few things she had heard during her trip: If you run over a cat in Indonesia, you have to take it home with you and bury it in the garden. If you don’t, it will bring bad luck. Also, never cut your nails or sweep the floor in the evening. They believe that if you do, something bad will happen to your parents.
Just at that moment our 2nd round of sushi was brought to us by a girl who had really long nails. We looked at each other and burst out laughing. We did explain to her why we were laughing 😊
As always, the sushi was delicious and Carly and I could eat here every day.
IF AN EYELASH FALLS OUT, MAKE A WISH!
While we carried on chatting, an eyelash fell next to my plate. I picked the eyelash up between my thumb and forefinger, put it on the back of my left hand and blew it away. Carly looked at me in astonishment and asked me what on earth I was doing.
Now it was my turn to tell her something about old superstitions; if an eyelash falls out, you put it on the back of your left hand, make a wish and blow the eyelash away.
This superstition dates back to the Middle Ages, when people believed that blowing away an eyelash protected you from the devil.
So if ever an eyelash falls out, make a wish and blow it away…
With love,
